Shakespeare à la Carte
BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2008
“..delicious... a clever gem of a production” Miriam O’Reilly, Pick of the Week Radio 4.
Shakespeare à la Carte takes both the familiar and the unfamiliar speeches of Shakespeare and plays them out with and amongst audiences sat in a restaurant while they enjoy their coffee and croissants, or an evening meal and wine. The audience become part of Henry V’s army, the players in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and secret onlookers as lovers declare their vows from Romeo and Juliet.
The show was originally devised by Jonathan Cullen & Richard Hahlo and performed by Jonathan Cullen, Fiona Dunn, Richard Hahlo and the waiters and manager at Pizza Express in Brighton.
Shakespeare à la Carte has since been adapted for radio, and broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2009 and 2010 and 2013. It continues to tour and has played at Canterbury Festival, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the Theatre Festival Horsens Denmark, Ipswich Pulse Festival, Octoberfeast Lewes, Maidenhead and Brighton Dome.
